Meeting with Alberta Provincial Government Cabinet Ministers (April 3, 2023)

As ABMK representatives, we were grateful for the opportunity to meet with two of the Provincial Cabinet Ministers to discuss some areas of interest and concern by our members.
While we were with them for almost an hour, the time went by very quickly. It was a productive session with both Ministers engaged, commenting and asking questions about the areas we brought forward which included:

1. The growing need for an Independent Seniors Advocate reporting to the Legislative Assembly. Population demographics indicate there will be an ever-increasing demand for “senior specific” services and senior’s issues are not only health care issues. Seniors struggle with poverty, loneliness, housing insecurity, lack of access to social services and more. One way that seniors protect themselves is through self-isolation…they need to know who they can turn to with their various concerns including health care, dental care, housing, income support, non-personal health care, trustee and guardian issues, transportation, loneliness, senior abuse, end of life issues and the promotion of MaiD; as not all senior’s concerns are medical.
2. The need for good palliative care in Alberta to offer an alternative to MaiD. We provided statistics in support of the need as not every Albertan is receiving the palliative care they need. The funds currently allocated are not sufficient to provide the palliative care needed.
3. Resolution 2022.1 Enact Federal Legislation to Reduce Food Loss and Waste which was put forward by the Diocese of Calgary We provided them with supporting documentation.
4. Reaffirmation of our support for Publicly Funded Catholic Education. We learned that there is a continuing unease about the future of publicly funded Catholic education as while the opposition says they support Catholic education; they have never said publicly funded Catholic Education.

We also discussed examples of past resolutions as well resolutions presently being worked on.
